English Bulldog Training – Train to Stop Pulling

How do you train your English bulldog puppy to stop pulling? Often times, this kind of behavior becomes annoying and seems like no matter what you do, your English bulldog will simply not stop pulling on the leash! It’s true that English bulldogs are quite stubborn, but isn’t there some technique you can do to stop your bulldog from pulling? We want to say there is, and of course, there are methods that work better than others. But in reality, training your English bulldog to stop pulling is sometimes easier said than done.

One of the key factors you must remember is never letting your pet have their own way. When you allow your English bulldog do whatever he or she wants, you will soon realize that’s when you fail as a dog trainer. The most important part is displaying that your level of stubbornness exceeds theirs, and with enough patience, your Bulldog will finally realize that you’re not someone who’s going to give in so easily. Remember, you are the one taking your Bulldog for a walk, not the other way around! Think of the approach you use to stop your Bulldog from pulling: Do you pull on the leash and make him come to a complete stop and listen to you? Is this action consistent, or it only occurs a few times as you let him drag you on the rest of the walk?

Here are a few tips to walking your Bulldog:

First of all, make sure that you’re not walking your Bulldog using a harness. This gives you absolutely no control over your Bulldog as they’re very strong and should be walked with a collar and a short lead. This ensures that your Bulldog will obey what you tell him. Collars such as the martingale seems to be quite effective as it only tightens when the Bulldog pulls on the leash.

Every time your Bulldog pulls on the leash, stop him immediately. Place your foot and prevent him for walking forward until the tension is released. This will tell your Bulldog that pulling is bad, and you should keep doing it consistently. After he stops pulling, instantly praise him and provide a treat (every now and then) but keep the praising consistently.

Another thing you can do is keep changing directions every time your Bulldog pulls. This will tell your Bulldog that pulling won’t get him where he wants.
