She is a rescue dog, about 5 months old. She is sweet as can be, but is MUCH harder to potty train than our other bulldog.

Bulldog Answer:

Answer by silverleaf
I’ve found that if you have one housetrained dog, sometimes they can “help” housetrain new dogs. If you take them out at the same time, that can help her “get it”, so to speak.

Persistence and patience. Good luck.

Hello
I have a 4 month american bulldog. I was thinking about its future and would like to know whats a good age to start weight training him. (i would only like answeres from people with experience.) thanks

Bulldog Answer:

Answer by ♥Pit Bull♥
Only after he has reached full maturity, and your Vet gives the ok to do.

He will need X-rays first, to give him a health clearance before starting something like that.

Full physical maturity is at 2+ years.

Over exercise and strenuous activity on a young, growing, large breed pup is not a good idea.

American Bulldogs are one of the few dog breeds that can claim that they were truly developed here in America. This breed is large in size and is very strong and muscular with a strong jaw. There are two types of this bulldog, the Johnson Type, and the Scott Type. While the differences between these two types is mostly gone now, in the past they had some distinct differences.

The American Bulldog is derived from the English Bulldog. This bulldog was brought over by immigrants from Scotland and England. Farmers and ranchers loved to use this dog for everyday tasks like herding and fetching. One of the main uses of this dog was to chase feral pigs.

Feral pigs in the south were large in numbers because they had no natural predators. Farmers used these dogs to chase these pigs away from crops and gardens, and also to hunt them for food. For an unknown reason by the early 1940′s this dog was almost extinct.

In the late 1940′s however, they starting making a comeback. The two people mainly responsible for how this breed appears today are John Johnson and Allen Scott. These two men worked together in the southern United States buying bulldogs and breeding them, with the aim of building a better bulldog.

Eventually the two split ways, but each kept breeding bulldogs on their own and therefore we ended up with two different types of American Bulldogs. The Johnson Type is a large dog with a shorter muzzle. The Scott Type is smaller with a longer muzzle, but today most bulldogs are a mix between these two.

Today these dogs are used for a wide variety of activities. Some dogs are used for protection services while others are used for weight pulling competition. These dogs can also compete in agility competitions as well. While some dogs are still used to chase feral pigs, mostly these dogs are just used as family dogs today.

These dogs normally live 10-14 years and are generally very healthy. American bulldogs dog have some genetic problems but those are mainly confined to certain lines. Some health problems more common in these dogs include enlarged hearts, kidney problems, thyroid problems, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, entropion and ectropion (eye problems), and bone cancer.

This dog has a short coat that is smooth and very easy to care for with moderate shedding. They come in several colors with blue or merle being the most desired. They can weigh up to 125 pounds, so you definitely want to have a lot of room for these dogs in your yard.

Unless very well trained it is not a recommended dog for new dog owners or for those people with small children or cats. These dogs can be very aggressive, so that is why proper training and socialization is necessary at a young age.

As you can see the American Bulldog is not for everyone. If you have a large backyard and time to properly train them you can have a very loyal and friendly dog.

Bulldog Question: American Bulldog Training?
I’m trying to figure out on what type of obedience training to send my dog to or how to train it, I want my dog to be a champion. Loyal, Good Family Dog, Protective when need be, Listen to commands, Highly Intelligent etc.

Bulldog Answer:

Answer by schnzrlady
I do not think American Bulldogs can show at AKC trials so first you need to find out what venue you can compete at UKC, ASCA, or some other venue. Then you need to find out what the requirements are and find a trainer to work with. This needs to be someone who competes with their dogs, not a Petsmart/Petco trainer. Don’t send your dog to obedience school…you need to train it yourself. A good trainer will teach you how to do that.

Go to your local library and check out books on dog training. There are lots of good books out there to help you understand the theory but remember…they are not a substitute for the hands on assistance from an experienced trainer. It is very difficult for an inexperienced person to successfully train a dog to upper levels from a book as there is so much more to learn than just how to do the exercise.

It is a long road to become an obedience champion but correctly done it builds a strong bond between dog and owner.

              Training Your French Bulldog

The French Bulldog is a very popular breed in the United States but it originates from England. The French bulldog was bred down over the years to be a smaller version of the English Bulldog. They are beautiful dogs that make great companions and family pets. While they are wonderful pets, as with any animal you own, you need to spend time training your French bulldog.

Most French bulldogs are laid back and not overly energetic. They do benefit from daily walks to keep them engaged and in shape. It is very easy to incorporate training your French bulldog into your everyday routine. All dogs need to learn some basic commands to make them easier to live with and to make them responsible members of the dog community. All dogs should know four basic commands.

- Heel
- Sit
- Stay
- Come

French bulldogs are very intelligent but you will need to be patient with them during training. Always keep your training sessions short. No more than 15 – 20 minutes at a time so that your dog will stay interested and attentive. All dogs learn at different speeds and you need to take your time so that you don’t frustrate your dog to the point that he refuses to listen to you at all.

The French bulldog does better with consistent training so you need to have a plan and follow it. You also have to follow through with your lessons or you will confuse your dog and the commands will not be learned properly.

Remember to only use positive re-enforcement. Never yell at your French bulldog or hit him. Punishment will not make your dog learn any better and will actually set back your training efforts. You will also lose the trust of your dog which will not be easy to get back.

Bulldog Question: American Bulldog TRAINING Help!!!?
HELP! I really dont know what else to do. Our 10 mth old American Bulldog is destroying everything in and outside our home! He has chewed the trim at four different locations in the house down to the drywall. He has scratched a hole in our laundry room about 10 inches round and is only a little bit away from actually getting through the drywall to the insulation. Tuesday he jumped at the kitchen counter, took his foot like a scoop and chewed up my cell phone. Yesterday we got 1/4th of our kids’ new wooden swing set up. The end with the fort has a ladder on one side and rock climb on other. The base has a 4×4 wood along the bottom. About 4 inches stick out on each side for support. He chewed all four corners off!!!!! He is now in his crate in the AM for 2 hours until my husband gets home. The fenced in back yard where we keep him also has the swing set. This is the area he is to have to run and exercise but we cant have him in there if he’s going to chew up the brand new swing set!

PLEASE – SERIOUS SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO TRAIN HIM AND MAKE HIM LISTEN AND KNOW WHAT NOT TO DO!!! (PICTURES…)

http://s708.photobucket.com/albums/ww83/ojmom/?newest=1

I forgot to add that he is with one of us all day. He has chew toys, stuffed toys, bones, raw hides, food, water, etc. He is active.
Also, my husband is ready to boot him out and get rid of him. I am not happy with what he’s doing but I dont want to give him away. I want to keep him but this needs to get better SOON!

Bulldog Answer:

Answer by bob ©
CRATE HIM when you cant supervise! when you are with him, do not leave him unattended and do not let him wander the house by himself. he has to stay with you or be in a crate. not only is it frustrating for you but he is at risk for an obstruction.

if need be, get a basket muzzle for him while you are training him. this way he can still drink and pant, but he cant eat things.

Bulldog Question: American Bulldog training help?
I have a 1 and a half year old American Bulldog pup. I ended up going into the hospital last year and he never really got socialized around the right time of his life, and now he is extremely good with everyone in my house, but VERY aggressive towards other people and animals… What can and should I do? He is very easily dominated by others if they come in and command him right away by telling him to sit, however, if someone comes in and doesn’t do that right away, he growls and tries to bite. This is very disconcerning to me because of his size (about 110 lbs). Will training classes work now, after he is over a year old? Where in Michigan can I find a good training school?

Bulldog Answer:

Answer by Stefanie K
I would get him in training asap. I have an american bulldog puppy, he is 4 month and already showing dog aggression. Were trying to fix that now. Socialization is so important for that breed because they are naturally stand offish towards strangers. I think any training will help the 2 of you. Just be patient and loyal with the training. It will work out. Good luck to you!

To begin we take a look at some facts about this breed then move onto a more indepth perspective on the breed.

Breed group: Mastiff

Weight: male: 70-120, female: 60-100 lbs

Height: male: 22-28, female: 20-26 inches

Overview

The American Bulldog was almost extinct after the Second World War, but they were saved by a man with the name of John D. Johnson. At first these dogs were used for the sport of bull baiting, and they also became valued by farmers due to their intelligence. This breed also has very good working abilities, stamina and also possesses a very caring nature. These dogs were also very good hunters, and they used to hunt wild boars, bears and raccoons.

Temperament

This dog is known as a loving family pet that will get along well with children and other pets. The American Bulldog is very determined dog that will not think twice before attacking predators or threats towards its owners. This breed is without fear, confident and very agile. These dogs have very strong protective instincts and should therefore be well socialised from an early age onwards. Some American Bulldogs might be aggressive toward other dogs and also a bit wary of people they do not know. These dogs will thrive when they are in the company of their families.

Care

The American Bulldog has a short coat that is fairly easy to maintain. You brush them often with a firm hair brush it will help to minimise hair loss, and also keep their coats in a good condition. Only bath these dogs when it is really needed with a mild shampoo. The nails of these dogs should also be trimmed once a week, otherwise they will get too long. Make sure that you only trim the top part of the nail. Also check the ears of these dogs to make sure they are free from allergies or infections.

Training

Make sure that you are prepared well when training these dogs, as they will become bored easily. Make sure that you have at least one hour per day available to exercise and train this dog. If you are not able to meet this need, you might want to consider another breed. Training these dogs should commence from a very early age onwards, and these dogs will not perform well if training methods are cruel and heavy handed. The training should be fair and consistent to get the best results. The American Bulldog does not do well with self-control, and will therefore need more time and attention.

Health problems

American Bulldogs are a very healthy and strong breed, but they do have a few health concerns that potential owners should be aware of. The most common concern is hip dysplasia. Some other health problems are also eye problems, ingrown eyelids, elbow dysplasia and skin and allergy problems.

Bulldog Question: I have a 11 week american bulldog. Training him to go outside. Problem he drinks too much and urinates const
constantly. I have been giving him water several times a day. But if I leave it out he won’t stop drinking it. My mom gave him a bath and when she placed him in the water he wouldn’t stop drinking it. I let him outside he did his business and then ater I brought him in he went again in 20 minutes. So now I cut him down to several drinks a day but not a whole bowl. He seems like he is more thirtly. I cut out his drinks after 10 and place him in his cage and let him out at 6 a.m. He holds all night. Anyone have had this problem and any suggestions welcomed. How much should he be drinking in a full day. He weighs about 20 pounds.

Bulldog Answer:

Answer by westoz
Dogs dont drink for fun, they are thirsty, doing this because it is convenient for you is wrong. He may have a problem that needs addressing if he seems constantly thirsty. DO NOT cut water supply. PS dogs urinate all the time and a pup does not has self control just like babies. He will when he grows up but be patient.(diabetes can cause this)
